The Amari Valley is a short drive over the mountains to the south of Eleftherna. It is a fertile valley in the foothills of Psiloritis and Kedros. The valley was known as a centre of resistance to the Germans during the Battle of Crete and the German occupation. After the abduction of General Heinrich Kreipe the Germans destroyed a number of villages in the area including the village of Gerakari.
